2. Dyson-SUTD Innovation Studio

Fifteen years ago, Dyson began its journey in Singapore with a small engineering team focused on creating the world's fastest, smallest digital electric motor. Singapore was chosen for its skilled workforce and supply chain capabilities in technology manufacturing. This venture, initially laden with challenges, eventually revolutionized global standards in home cleaning and hair styling, significantly reducing electricity consumption and material use in vacuum cleaners. Dyson's Singapore-made motors, now numbering over 100 million, reflect the country's dedication to innovation and engineering, a commitment further underscored by Singapore being Dyson's Global Headquarters. James Dyson's engineering career, rooted in design school, underscores the importance of unconventional thinking and boldness in problem-solving, principles central to Dyson's approach in research, design, and development. This philosophy drives Dyson's pioneering work in technology and is integral to the education of future engineers, fostering multidisciplinary skillsets in hardware and software integration. The collaboration with SUTD, supported by the James Dyson Foundation, aims to inspire young minds in engineering and science through hands-on experiences in advanced fields like Intelligent Robotics and Machine Learning. Dyson's commitment to nurturing future engineers is evident in their significant investment in engineering education in Singapore, emphasizing the importance of experimentation, embracing failure, and challenging norms in engineering and scientific innovation.

3. Optical Quasar Lab

Our optical Quasar laboratory is at the forefront of research in several cutting-edge fields. We specialize in Plasmonic Colors and Applications, investigating how light interacts with metallic nanostructures to produce vivid, dye-free colors. Our research in 2D Materials focuses on their use in tunable plasmonics, allowing for adjustable optical properties. We are also pioneering in Reconfigurable Metasurfaces, designing surfaces that can manipulate light in innovative ways. Our lab delves into the Quantum Dot technology, particularly in Semiconductor and Perovskite QDs, exploring their potential in displays and sensors. Additionally, we conduct significant research in Self-Assembly, Nano Cavities, and Deterministic Positioning, crucial for precise light interaction at the nanoscale. Another key area is Structural Colors and Applications, providing sustainable color production alternatives. Our expertise also extends to Nanofabrication and Thin Film Growth, essential for the development of advanced optical devices.

Established in Aug 2015, the is designed to facilitate the complete semiconductor process, nanofabrication and precision machining for both undergraduate and graduate students and research fellows.

Our Cleanroom is designed and constructed in accordance to FS209E Class 1000 (ISO Class 6), in compliance with all necessary supporting facilities like Building Automation System, Air Scrubber System, Waste Water Treatment System, Compressed Air System, Fire Protection System, Laboratory Fume Cupboard and Process Exhaust System, Security System and dedicated storages spaces.
